Runcil - The Task
The idea was to unbundle a feature of any application to create a stand alone digital product. The idea was to understand nuances of how a digital product is developed when a single feature is considered.
I had to select 1 out of 20 different applications to unbundle. To make each solution unique was a challenge as I had to go through so many existing applications in order to identify a feature which can be unbundled. I then had to shortlist 5 of those 20 ideas and eventually, one. After a lot of scrutinizing, I chose to unbundle the tracking feature of Strava.
Runcil is a running application which will track your runs and also function as a pencil by drawing on the canvas forming an art. Essentially, Runcil will help you create an amazing GPS art. Runcil offers various modes which runners could use to make their runs more interesting without compromising on any of their activity.
Now that I identified what I was supposed to do, it was time to figure out if there are any applications which are focused on such specific activity. I did a competitive analysis to figure it out what existing products provide and how can my application be different. I split it into two distinct part: direct and in-direct competition.
Runcil offers more
From the direct and in-direct competition, it was quite evident that none of the applications provide the unique features which Runcil would offer. Few applications are good at something while others are not, Runcil is trying to incorporate a few of those existing features and wrap it around the concept of GPS Art / Drawing. Here are just a few extra features which Runcil will offer:
Fly on the wall
In my initial phase of research, I did some observations to figure out what I need to do while I take my interviews. I cannot just stop people while they are running and ask them questions. The idea was to search for a place where I might find runners who stop to take a breather and then approach them. It was very difficult to do so because of the cold.
While I did my observation for the runners who were running, I also got a chance to interview a few of them. It was interesting to see what they had to say.
“A fit mind and body, means a fit life.""
Exercising has become an integral part of my life. I get up pretty early and run a few miles before I start my day. It keeps me fit. But sometimes it becomes very mundane. I would like to make it a bit more exciting.
