Data beyond 0s and 1s

When I think about data, the first thing which pops in my head is binary language. Machines convert all that we type into a string of 0s and 1s which makes it easier for it to calculate. All the calculations, data processing and information generation is actually binary which then again is converted into the language we understand. Similarly, even if the data is well organized on a spreetsheet it becomes difficult to read and understand. The complexity of any data has become so high that it has become hard to write the data in an intuitive way. People realized that data needs to be read and comprehended.


Data visualization is a new trend which is ploting data in an easy way. It helps people read and interact with the data. The representation also helps to comprehend it in a better way. Picture speaks louder than words, that is exactly what data visualization does. It breaks the data into representative pieces which can then be used intuitively. High volume of data can be written, but it is really hard to manage using excel sheet anymore. The whole functionality of data visaulization is to make data intuitive. Imagine a string of 0s and 1s in an excel sheet, it is impossible to read it. Just like the computer converts the binary language which we can read, designers need to represent the data in a way which can be understood easily. The easiest way is to connect it with a story and present it aesthetically.


Storytelling is an important aspect of data visualization. The visual representation cannot be just showcasing the data, it also needs to describe why it is presented in a certain way. A story has many elements which are interwined with each other, only then it makes sense. Each of these elements are characters who have to play a role. If played correctly the whole story falls in place and makes sense. Imagine the same while visualizing data, there are various ways it can be made, although it is also dependant on which kind of data is to be represented. It is vital to stick to a theme which follows and embraces the data. Homogeneousness is an important factor to make the data blend in properly.


If a data visualization is engaging and intuitive, it means the story has been told impressively. It makes a huge difference of how people connect and interpret data. If people have a certain problem which the data is assisting them to solve then the excitement increases and the story is succesful. I believe in telling highly engaging stories, do you?
